The Game Revolves Around Soccer Goals

A soccer playing field is quite simple. All you need is a rectangular field, some corner flags and, most importantly, soccer goals. The soccer goal is an area of space defined by two posts and a crossbar that has caused hysteria and heartache across the soccer-loving world for more than a century.

It is the area that decides which team can win or lose. If the ball enters that space legally, it represents one goal for the team that has been trying to put it there and a setback for the team trying to prevent the ball from entering.

The player most closely associated with the soccer goal is the goalkeeper. It is his job to deny the opposition players the chance to kick, head, chest or knee the ball into the goal.

Within the 10 outfield players, anywhere from one to three players have been tasked with scoring goals, which means beating the opposition goalkeeper.

These players are usually called strikers or forwards. However, the responsibility for scoring goals does not lie exclusively with them. Midfielders, defenders and even goalkeepers are allowed to score goals.

The goalkeeper, though, and the soccer goal are practically inseparable. The goalkeeper will rarely move more than 18 yards away from his goal in order to protect it. If he does, there is the danger of an opposition player lobbing the ball over his head and into the goal.

It has happened many times at top-grade soccer and can cause a goalkeeper much embarrassment.

The soccer goal is wrapped by a net behind the goal line so it doesn’t intrude on to the field. The net is not only there to stop the ball from going too far away. It is also there so the referee and the players know that the ball as gone inside the goal, rather than wide or over.
