Soccer Practice Keeps Players on their Toes

May 10, 2007 by sachinskg

Soccer practice is one of the great traditions of the game. There is no team, whether it is a big professional club or neighborhood amateur side, that doesn’t have some sort of practice session to prepare for games.

With a team of 11 players, practice is an essential part of match preparation. In an individual sport, you can gauge how good you are relative to your skills. However, in a team sport such as soccer, you have to gauge your skills relative to the other 10 players around you.

Soccer practice provides you with the vehicle to do this. You need to practice certain moves and drills so every member of the team will know their role come game time. It may be set plays such as free kicks or corners or it may be trying to adapt your skills to random moves during open play. Whatever the case, soccer practice helps you hone your abilities.
Soccer practice is also useful in helping your team iron out deficiencies. The team may have made some mistakes in their previous match. Practice offers a good time for the coach to go over those errors and help the players correct any flaws.

A soccer squad would normally have more than the required 11 players. National teams usually pick a squad of up to 23 players while clubs would sometimes have more.

How does a coach know which 11 to start with? He cannot simply pick 11 players at random and ask them to play their best in a match. He needs to have several practice sessions to identify the best players so that he has a good idea about his starting 11 long before the match.

Players who fail to get into the starting team need not worry. Soccer practice gives you a great opportunity to show the coach what you can do and convince him to promote you to the first team at the expense of another player.

This kind of competition for team places thrives at the more successful club and national teams.
