Coaching Youth Soccer is a Rewarding Experience
Coaching youth soccer players can be a lot of fun. Adults and more senior kids are used to the disciplined world of coaching because they are either on the verge of professional soccer or are already pros.
Kids, however, are free spirits. While it is important to instill discipline in them, the main reason they want to play soccer is to have fun. Therefore, a coach must get involved with the kids and join in the fun. If the youngsters enjoy the game, it means there is a greater chance they will pursue the sport at a later age when a more serious attitude is required.
The best way to groom soccer players, as in all sports, is to start them out young. If they can master the basic skills at an early age, they can work on other aspects such as strength, stamina and fitness when they are older.
When coaching youth soccer, the coach must know how to identify the talented individuals and set out development programs so that these players can fulfill their potential.
Therefore, it is important that the coach covers all elements of the sport, from technical skills, to tactics and theory. The coach must be able to answer any question the kids throw at him.
The coach has to find a balance between encouragement and discipline. For the younger kids, harsh treatment could turn them away from the game. Always try to find positives, no matter how bad a player is.
Positive messages increase confidence and that allows a youngster to improve his game. As a coach, you should be able to pinpoint individual weaknesses and advise each player on what he or she must do to improve their all-round skills.
During a training session, you can take the youth players through drills and exercises and even talk about the theoretical aspects of the game. However, you must remember to end your session with a game. That is what the kids are there for. So, make it a fun day for them by organizing a game at the end of a rewarding training session, and the kids are sure to return the following week for another day of great soccer.
