Coaching soccer players is a big responsibility. Whether you are an amateur or professional coach, the demands of the game are high and results are an important factor. In professional soccer, the coach’s job is always under scrutiny, especially if the team is experiencing a particularly bad spell.

A coach needs to have an intimate knowledge of the game and the ability to spot strengths and flaws in players so he can use these skills for the optimum benefit of the team.

In soccer, as in any sport, you find coaches with very different approaches to their art. You have aggressive coaches who inspire by fear and strict adherence to their playing philosophies, and you also get free-thinking coaches who allow their players the freedom to let their skills flourish.

No matter what style they employ, the coach’s main aim is to make sure their team is winning, or at least improving.

When judging a coach’s skills, it is not only about results. It is about the players around him. If a coach can work with his squad and make them better players than they were before he took over, then that is a mark of a top-quality coach.

Every coach needs to be tactically aware, but possessing the ability to improve a player’s technical skills is something not all coaches possess. This is a gift.

During a match, the coach must be able to read the game and react to different situations. If your team is leading, you must relate instructions to your players to either increase your lead or not squander what you have.

If you are losing, you must take action to get back into the match. This involves making the correct substitutions at the right time and making adjustments to playing responsibilities on the field.

Often, the shifting of just one player can make all the difference.

The half-time talk is also an important function of the coach. Football is often said to be a game of two halves, so you have to make sure you say the right things so your players can either bolster their lead or initiate a fight back.
